Current options are:
‘92 MR2 2.2l, 120k miles, owner is in the process of replacing the crank seal, timing belt, and water pump.
‘03 Mazda6 3.0l manual, 165k miles, everything works other than the sunroof and heated seats
This is basically the worst time of the year to be looking to buy a reliable manual fuel-efficient fun car that isn’t a Miata . There ain’t shit.

MR2 although the Mazda6 would make for a better all-around DD if you have to carry passengers or transport large cargo.

But the rust though...

Mazda didn’t fix the rust issues on those after the Protege problems?

I would stay away from the ford v6.

The Mazda is a ford duratech v6. Nopegirl.gif

Oh fuck no. Later Mazdas are so, so, so much worse than the Protege ever was. You could not pay me to drive a Mazda 3/5/6. Seriously. They make Focus rust look like amateur hour.

Corolla or Camry

Wow! I thought the Protege rust was bad, especially around the passenger front fender because of condensation issues.

go find me one locally under $5k, manual, that isn’t a complete beat up piece of shit. I challenge you. Kansas, btw.

What’s wrong with the Duratec?

I would normally suggest Saab or Volvo if you want a cheap manual, but those don’t genera lly tick the reliable box...
Last gen MR2 or Solstice? Summer cars might be cheaper now that it’s fall. Early Boxster with hardtop?
90s Accord?

Nothing really, it’s just a ford v6 in a mazda. I guess it depends on how much you trust ford 2006 V6 engines.

Is there a reason not to trust them? The problems I remember from Taruses equipped with the Duratec were all trans-related. It was a fairly fun engine and I’ve seen the Jaguar variant (different heads) swapped into Miatas before and it sounded absolutely amazing.

Really don’t want a convertible. There is a Boxster with 110k for $5k but... that sounds like a recipe for expensive insurance and repairs. My wife agrees, sadly, even though it is her dream car.

I don’t think there is any particular reason not to trust them. If the car has gone 165k on the original engine it will probably do another 40k without issue.

Wow, that’s almost suspiciously good. If the MR2 falls through that might be my next plan of action. I have a friend who is going through Oklahoma and is going to check it out for me on his way back on Thursday.

You’re gonna need to add a few more candidates or you’re going to have a hell of time.
Pontiac Vibe GT
Corolla XRS
Matrix XRS
160-180hp, manual, and you won’t car about the trash your wife leaves in them.

Here’s some typical Mazda 3 rust locati on s, which Mazda will deny under warranty for the most bullshit reasons.
Which VERY quickly turns into this:

The Duratec is a fantastic motor. The other Ferd parts around it are not. I hope the 6 doesn’t use the same transmission as the Taurus either , as they are weak.

It might just be in a part of town where no one wants a stick shift so they sit on the lot for a while. A manual Golf/Jetta will incur a price pena lty in my city, but go about half an hour west to a town with a thriving VW/Euro scene and then it gets a premium for being a stick shift.

I knew the auto was a pile but is the manual weak too?
![]() 10/28/2018 at 16:10 |

Yeah but... good luck finding those around here in reasonable shape/price

Can’t say. Very few were sold, and all Sables/Tauri were autos. You’d have to find a forum for manual 6's for some good anecdotes.

Getting one with high miles isn't much of a risk and it slashes the price in half. There's even Vibe GTs up here under 4 grand. Corolla XRS' are damn rare though.

Boxster with a hardtop might be decent... I might try running a Boxster through a quote - often those higher end cars
are cheap to insure, as the average owner is usually a responsible 40yr old who doesn’t crash as much as your typical Civic owner. I wouldn’t be surprised if insurance was cheaper than your Miata.
Maybe a Focus SVT? Those are pretty cheap now, usually manual and decent.

go the Mazda 6
